Unit One

Narrative Assignment - June

This one was inspired by reality. The characters are real. All of the things that happened in the story really happened. All of the things that were said in that story were really said. Even the details are factual. However, the events and exchanges did not happen in this order, nor on the same day. I compressed serveral episodes into a single story.

Remixes -

  • RichardRemix
  • Richard originally wrote two narratives, each involving decisions that contrast with the other. The second narrative also had to do with what led to his disillusionment. By placing the unified work in a journal setting, we are able to better examine how his thoughts have changed from day to day and from start to finish. In terms of my revisions, I tried to make everything written uniformly in first person and active voice (the old Hemingway method). Of course, my definition of peripheral is subjective, but I tried to remove anything which did not show character.

  • MeghanRemix
  • Meghan's original story stands out from the other narratives because it is a dialogue, not a monologue. So, I took those conversing people, made them different people with the same names, and made them do some of the same things. This time both individuals are a bit less conscientious than before. As a result, the story loses a bit of its depth, which is fine, because the characters became pretty shallow as well. I took the opportunity to generate some human interaction, not to show greater meaning. The truth is in the gutter.

  • LyndseyRemix
  • I hope everyone enjoys reading my first satire of the season as much as I enjoyed writing it. I made no changes to the first sentence. I had to keep it. It is how I came up with the idea to write about an ugly dog. I took the, "when," to mean literally, "at the same time as the aforementioned action." Lyndsay used the word to show sequence and I interpreted it as showing coincidence. For a while, my friends called me Literal John (you know, like the rapper). I'm glad it didn't stick.
